The world’s best golfers head to Royal Birkdale for the 2026 Open Championship, with Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy leading a highly competitive field chasing the famous Claret Jug.
Royal Birkdale is widely regarded as one of the fairest but most demanding courses on The Open rotation. Its deep bunkers, narrow fairways and exposure to the unpredictable coastal weather will reward accuracy, patience and intelligent course management.
Scheffler arrives as the defending champion after winning at Royal Portrush in 2025. His consistency, elite approach play and ability to limit mistakes make him an obvious contender, although his preparation suffered a setback when he missed the cut at the Genesis Scottish Open.

McIlroy is listed at similar odds and may be the most popular pick among British and Irish supporters. The Northern Irishman won his second consecutive Masters earlier this season and already owns one Open title, having lifted the Claret Jug in 2014.

Tommy Fleetwood represents one of England’s best hopes. Growing up close to Royal Birkdale gives him extensive experience of the course and conditions. Fleetwood has repeatedly contended in majors, but converting opportunities into victories remains the key question. At roughly 18/1, he offers attractive value.
Matt Fitzpatrick is another strong English contender. His accurate driving, excellent short game and calm temperament are well suited to links golf. Recent form has placed him near the front of several betting markets at around 20/1.
Jon Rahm also demands attention. The two-time major winner has the power, creativity and competitive intensity needed to succeed at Royal Birkdale. Despite some inconsistent results this season, his Open record makes him difficult to dismiss.
A longer-priced option is Jordan Spieth. The American won at Royal Birkdale in 2017 and understands exactly how to navigate the course. His recent form may not match the favourites, but odds around 60/1 could appeal to bettors seeking an experienced outsider.
Min Woo Lee and newly crowned Scottish Open champion Tom Kim are also worth watching. Both arrive with confidence and possess the imagination required for links golf.
Scheffler and McIlroy deserve to lead the betting, but The Open’s unpredictable conditions ensure the tournament rarely follows a simple script. At Royal Birkdale, patience and adaptability may matter just as much as reputation.
