At just 20 years and 68 days old, Andrea Kimi Antonelli has achieved what most drivers spend their entire careers chasing: the Formula 1 World Championship.
The Italian secured his maiden title on Sunday, 1 November, finishing third at the Mexico City Grand Prix to become the youngest champion in the sport’s history, surpassing Sebastian Vettel’s record set in 2010.
A Star Is Born
Antonelli’s remarkable rise has been nothing short of extraordinary.
After replacing Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes in 2025, the young Italian faced enormous expectations. Fast-forward to his second season, and he has delivered one of the most impressive championship campaigns in recent memory.
With nine victories and 17 podium finishes in 2026, Antonelli has demonstrated blistering speed, maturity and remarkable consistency.
His championship also ends a 73-year wait for an Italian Formula 1 world champion, becoming the first since Alberto Ascari in 1953.
Mexico Delivers the Drama
Although Max Verstappen claimed victory in Mexico City, ahead of Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton, all eyes were on Antonelli.
Starting fourth, the Mercedes driver needed only ninth place to secure the championship.
However, the race was far from straightforward.
A heavy crash involving Valtteri Bottas triggered a red flag, disrupting strategies and setting up a dramatic restart.
Antonelli responded brilliantly, overtaking Charles Leclerc into Turn 1 to reclaim third place.
He eventually crossed the finish line just four seconds behind Verstappen, securing the championship with four races remaining.
Mercedes’ Next Superstar
Antonelli’s triumph represents another extraordinary achievement for Mercedes and team principal Toto Wolff.
Replacing seven-time champion Hamilton was always going to be a monumental challenge, but Antonelli has answered every question with performances on the track.
His success also makes him the first graduate of Mercedes’ junior programme to become Formula 1 World Champion.
For teammate George Russell, however, the result creates an intriguing new dynamic heading into 2027.
Mercedes now has a young world champion in its garage, and the balance of power within the team could become one of next season’s biggest talking points.
A New Era Begins
For years, Formula 1 has been dominated by established superstars, including Hamilton and Verstappen.
Now, a new generation has officially arrived.
Antonelli’s championship is more than a personal milestone. It signals a changing of the guard and offers fans an exciting glimpse into the future of motorsport.
With his first title secured at just 20, the question is no longer whether Kimi Antonelli belongs among Formula 1’s elite.
The question is how many more world championships he can win.
And if 2026 is anything to go by, this could be just the beginning.
