Blitzboks Capture Cape Town Sevens Glory in Thrilling Comeback Victory

The Blitzboks have once again lit up the Mother City, becoming the first team to defend their Cape Town Sevens crown after a dramatic 21–19 comeback win over World Series champions Argentina. In front of a roaring home crowd, the Springbok Sevens showed immense heart, composure, and resilience to overturn a game that, for long periods, seemed out of reach.

Argentina dominated much of the contest, capitalising on Blitzbok errors and using their physicality to control possession. Luciano Gonzalez, the reigning World Sevens Player of the Year, set the tone early with a powerful solo try that bulldozed through Shilton van Wyk and Selvyn Davids. Moments later, Marcos Moneta—so often a thorn in the Blitzboks’ side—dived under the posts after Gonzalez again created space with intelligent play.

At 12–5 down, the Blitzboks were fighting not just the scoreboard but their own early mistakes. However, they struck back through Donavan Don, who finished a well-worked move sparked by an intercepted pass and quick hands from Van Wyk.

Argentina tightened their grip early in the second half when Moneta produced a dazzling run, beating four defenders to extend the lead to 19–5. With just minutes remaining, the Blitzboks needed inspiration—and found it in debutant Sonwabo Sokoyi. With a devastating step and blistering pace, Sokoyi carved through the defence to narrow the gap and ignite belief.

Still trailing by five with time running out, the Blitzboks delivered a moment of magic. Van Wyk stripped Moneta in a crucial turnover, sparking a sweeping move across the field before Christie Grobbelaar received the final offload and raced under the posts for the match-winning try.

Argentina had one last shot from the kickoff, but Ricardo Duartee secured a vital turnover penalty, sparking celebrations even before the final whistle confirmed the Blitzboks’ triumph.

The victory marks coach Philip Snyman’s third tournament win—and his second consecutive Cape Town title—since taking charge. It capped a remarkable weekend for the hosts, who stormed past Fiji, Dubai champions New Zealand, Great Britain, and Olympic gold medallists France on their road to the final.

After two tournaments, South Africa now sit atop the HSBC Sevens World Series standings alongside Fiji and New Zealand, all on 32 points.

In the women’s competition, Australia avenged their Dubai defeat by beating New Zealand 26–12, joining the Black Ferns at the summit of the standings.
