South Africa’s franchises may not have shifted positions on the Vodacom United Rugby Championship log this past weekend, but make no mistake — this was a statement round. With dominant performances across the board, the local teams laid down a powerful marker ahead of what promises to be a decisive run to the playoffs.
Collectively, the South African sides racked up an astonishing 168 points while conceding just 45 across four home fixtures. It was a display of depth, power, and growing confidence — the kind of form that suggests a strong finish to the season is well within reach.
At the top end of the standings, the DHL Stormers continued to keep pace with log leaders Glasgow Warriors. While their 29–21 win over the Dragons may not have been as emphatic as some of the other results, it still delivered a crucial bonus-point victory. More importantly, it helped them solidify second place, especially with both Leinster and Ulster slipping up.
The Stormers’ position was further strengthened by the efforts of their fellow South African teams. The Vodacom Bulls and Hollywoodbets Sharks both secured crucial wins against direct playoff rivals Cardiff and Munster respectively — and did so without allowing either side a losing bonus point. That detail could prove decisive as the race for a top-four finish, and home playoff advantage, intensifies.
The Bulls bounced back in style from their recent defeat to the Stormers, dismantling Cardiff 40–7 in a performance that showcased their attacking firepower. Springbok stars Canan Moodie and Kurt-Lee Arendse were electric, while Embrose Papier continued his outstanding form at scrumhalf. With momentum back on their side, the Bulls now look well-positioned to push into the top bracket.
The Sharks, meanwhile, delivered arguably the performance of the round with a commanding 45–0 victory over Munster. Built on a dominant forward display and suffocating defence, the result was both emphatic and symbolic. While the scoreline may have been boosted by late tries, there was no denying the Sharks’ control throughout.
It was also a landmark occasion for Makazole Mapimpi, who celebrated his 100th appearance with two tries. Yet the biggest talking point may well have been the emergence of young fullback Luan Gilliomee. On debut, he delivered a dynamic performance filled with energy, creativity, and composure — potentially announcing himself as a future star.
The Lions added to the weekend’s success with a stunning 54–17 win over Edinburgh, underlining their attacking prowess and resurgence after a difficult mid-season spell.
Despite the positivity, the race for the playoffs remains tight. The Bulls are level with Connacht on 35 points in eighth, while the Sharks still have ground to make up in 11th. With teams like Benetton also pushing, there is little margin for error.
But if this weekend proved anything, it’s that South Africa’s teams are hitting form at exactly the right time. The final surge is on — and it could yet deliver a historic URC finish.
