In a gripping climax to the 2026 SA20 season at Newlands, the Sunrisers Eastern Cape underlined their dominance in South African domestic T20 cricket with a dramatic six-wicket victory over the Pretoria Capitals to secure their third SA20 title in four seasons.
Put into bat first, the Pretoria Capitals posted a respectable 158 for 7 in their 20 overs, largely thanks to a breathtaking century from Dewald Brevis. The young South African sensation was in imperious touch, scoring 101 off just 56 balls with a mix of power and precision that rescued Capitals from early trouble and anchored their innings.
Despite Brevis’s heroics, the Capitals never fully capitalised as the rest of the batting lineup offered limited support, with Bryce Parsons contributing a useful but modest 30. On the bowling side for Eastern Cape, Marco Jansen spearheaded the attack with an excellent 3 for 10, backed by disciplined spells from Lutho Sipamla and Anrich Nortje, which kept the Capitals in check at crucial junctures.
Chasing 159, the Sunrisers found themselves in a precarious position early on, slipping to 48 for 4 and facing a steep climb back into the game. At that point, it looked as though the Capitals might pull off a famous victory. But the game would shift dramatically thanks to a masterful partnership between Matthew Breetzke and captain Tristan Stubbs.
The duo combined skill with calmness under pressure to construct an unbeaten 114-run stand that turned the match on its head. Breetzke was outstanding, finishing on 68 not out off 49 balls, while Stubbs matched his resolve with 63 not out off 41, both bringing up half-centuries with timely boundaries and calculated aggression to keep the required run rate in check.
Their partnership ultimately steered the Sunrisers home with six wickets in hand and four balls to spare, completing a memorable chase and securing another SA20 crown for Eastern Cape.
For the Sunrisers, this third title in four seasons reinforces their reputation as the benchmark franchise in the SA20, blending explosive batting firepower with incisive bowling and strategic depth. Their balanced squad, led with flair and tactical acumen, continues to set the standard in T20 cricket domestically.
While the Capitals will rue missed opportunities, especially in the field, there’s little doubt that their journey to the final and Brevis’s brilliance will be remembered as one of the standout stories of the season.
