LIV Golf’s all-South African team, formerly known as Stinger GC, has officially rebranded as Southern Guards GC, marking a significant new chapter for the franchise just months before the league hosts its first-ever event on African soil.
The announcement was made on Tuesday and signals a deeper alignment between the team’s identity and its South African roots, as anticipation continues to build ahead of LIV Golf South Africa, scheduled to take place at Steyn City in Johannesburg from 19–22 March 2026.
A Brand Built on Identity and Unity
At the core of Southern Guards GC’s new identity is a strong emphasis on culture, unity, and resilience. The rebrand draws inspiration from the African philosophy of Ubuntu — “I am because we are” — reflecting a collective mindset rooted in shared purpose, teamwork, and national pride.
Central to the refreshed visual identity is the rhino, a powerful and symbolic figure in South African culture. Representing strength, endurance, and resolve, the rhino embodies both competitive toughness and a commitment to long-term legacy. The design incorporates distinctive South African textures and patterns, further anchoring the team’s identity in its home soil.
A Timely Transformation Ahead of LIV Golf South Africa
The rebrand comes at a pivotal moment for LIV Golf and South African sport. With more than 70,000 tickets already sold for LIV Golf South Africa, excitement around the event — and its host team — continues to gain momentum.
Speaking on the decision, Richard Glover, General Manager of Southern Guards GC, said the rebrand was both emotional and intentional.
“This has been an emotional and considered decision, but we felt the time was right to embrace a name and visual identity that more authentically reflects who we are and where we come from,” Glover said.
“Southern Guards GC reflects the responsibility we carry in representing South Africa on a global stage. With LIV Golf coming to the country for the first time, the timing couldn’t be more fitting for us to represent our heritage with pride.”
A Familiar Line-Up Under a New Banner
While the name and visual identity have evolved, the team’s core remains unchanged. Southern Guards GC will head into the 2026 season with the same all-South African line-up that has defined the team since its inception: Louis Oosthuizen, Branden Grace, Dean Burmester, and Charl Schwartzel.
Together, the quartet represents some of South Africa’s most accomplished golfers, combining major championship pedigree with deep international experience. Now united under a refreshed banner, they will carry heightened expectations into a landmark season for both the team and the continent.
More Than a Rebrand
The transition from Stinger GC to Southern Guards GC is more than a change in name — it is a statement of intent. As LIV Golf prepares to make history in South Africa, the country’s representative team is stepping forward with an identity that speaks directly to heritage, unity, and national pride.
For Southern Guards GC, the rebrand signals a bold embrace of who they are — and where they stand — as South Africa takes its place at the centre of LIV Golf’s global stage.
