LIV Golf has announced a major evolution to its tournament format, confirming that all events from the 2026 season will be played over 72 holes. The shift from three to four days of competition marks a significant milestone in the league’s mission to grow the sport globally while delivering more action and entertainment for fans.
Since launching, LIV Golf has run its events over 54 holes, typically from Friday to Sunday. Beginning in 2026, tournaments will start on Thursdays (or Wednesdays in select cases, such as LIV Golf Riyadh) and extend through the weekend. The league emphasized that while the extra day adds more golf, the signature team and individual competition formats — along with its trademark shotgun starts — will remain core to the experience.
“As we enter our fourth season as a League, the move to 72 holes marks a pivotal new chapter for LIV Golf that strengthens our League, challenges our elite field of players, and delivers more of the world-class golf, energy, innovation and access that our global audience wants,” said CEO Scott O’Neil. “We’re seeing upward momentum from Hong Kong to Adelaide to Indianapolis, and adding another day of golf benefits our fans, players, and partners.”
For each regular-season event, the individual competition will now be decided over 72 holes of stroke play, while team scores will be calculated based on each member’s results. Details for the season-ending Team Championship format will be announced at a later date.

Top players have already welcomed the change. Jon Rahm, Legion XIII captain and two-time Individual Champion, said, “LIV Golf is a player’s league. We want every opportunity to compete at the highest level, and 72 holes strengthens the competition.”
Bryson DeChambeau echoed that sentiment, noting the move “aligns with the historic format recognized globally” and represents “a proactive step that’s great for the game.” Meanwhile, Dustin Johnson praised the change for bringing LIV events closer to the feel of golf’s biggest tournaments.
Fans can expect the same energy and festival-like atmosphere that has defined LIV events — including music, entertainment, and the popular “Party Hole.” Thursdays will also feature live performances, fan zones, and expanded hospitality offerings.
The league’s commercial growth has been equally strong, with record fan attendance, sponsorship revenue, and global viewership in 2025. Its broadcast reach now spans over 200 countries and 900 million households, bolstered by a growing partnership with FOX Sports that drove a 90% increase in year-over-year U.S. viewership.
With the expansion to 72 holes, LIV Golf aims to solidify its place among the world’s top sports leagues — blending elite competition with entertainment and redefining what professional golf can be.
