Kenya Secures a Thrilling Double at the 2025 New York Marathon

Kenya once again stamped its authority on the global marathon stage as Benson Kipruto and Hellen Obiri delivered a remarkable double victory at the 2025 New York Marathon on Sunday.

In a thrilling men’s race that came down to the wire, Kipruto edged compatriot Alexander Mutiso by just 0.16 seconds – the closest finish in the event’s history.

Kipruto crossed the line in 2:08:09, adding the New York crown to his growing list of major titles that already includes Boston, Chicago, and Tokyo. Mutiso, the 2024 London Marathon champion, pushed hard in the final stretch through Central Park, nearly catching Kipruto in a breathtaking sprint finish.

“The last part was so hard, but I kept telling myself, ‘Come on, you can win it,’” said Kipruto. Kenya’s Albert Korir, the 2021 winner, completed the podium in 2:08:57, while legendary Eliud Kipchoge finished 17th in what could be his final major marathon.

The women’s race was equally memorable as Hellen Obiri produced a stunning run to defend her title and smash the course record.

Obiri surged ahead of Sharon Lokedi in the final mile, finishing in 2:19:51 — shattering Margaret Okayo’s 2003 record by nearly three minutes. Lokedi clocked 2:20:07, and Sheila Chepkirui followed closely in 2:20:24, with all three breaking the previous mark.

“It was an amazing run,” said Obiri. “We had a strong field, but I stayed patient and trusted my kick.”

With both titles secured, Kenya reaffirmed its marathon dominance in emphatic fashion.
