In a commanding performance at the Australian Open final, World No. 1 Jannik Sinner secured his second consecutive title in Melbourne and his third Grand Slam overall by defeating Alexander Zverev with a scoreline of 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-3.
Sinner’s victory places him among an elite group, becoming just the eighth player in the Open Era to win his first three Grand Slam men’s singles finals. This win also marks his 21st consecutive hard-court triumph at major tournaments, a streak that began after a loss to Zverev at the 2023 US Open.
Throughout the match, Sinner showcased the qualities that have made him a dominant force on hard courts. His relentless ball-striking and superior court coverage kept Zverev under constant pressure. Notably, Sinner did not face a single break point during the final, a feat achieved by only three other players in the last 35 years: Pete Sampras (Wimbledon 1995), Roger Federer (Wimbledon 2003), and Rafael Nadal (US Open 2017).
This victory also makes Sinner the first Italian player, male or female, to win three singles Grand Slam titles, surpassing Nicola Pietrangeli’s two. At 23, he is the youngest player to win back-to-back men’s singles titles at the Australian Open since Jim Courier in 1992-1993.
On the other side of the net, Zverev’s quest for his first major title continues. This defeat marks his third Grand Slam final loss, having previously fallen short in New York and Paris. Despite his efforts, Zverev struggled to find answers to Sinner’s dominant play.
Sinner’s triumph in Melbourne not only solidifies his position at the pinnacle of men’s tennis but also underscores his potential to dominate the sport for years to come. As he continues to break records and set new benchmarks, the tennis world eagerly anticipates his future endeavors.
