Vingegaard wins stage 11 of Tour de France as Pogacar cracks on Col du Granon.


With foreign starts in Belgium (twice), Yorkshire, the Netherlands, and Germany in the past decade, the Grand Départ for the 2022 Tour de France will be held in the race’s most far-flung destination yet as the peloton kicks off three weeks of racing with three days in Denmark.
The action began on July 1, 2022 with a time trial in the capital Copenhagen. Two sprint stages will follow as the riders tackle the flat roads from Roskilde to Nyborg and from Vejle to Sønderborg.
After three days of racing, July 4 will see a travel day, the earliest rest day in the history of the race, and the first of three en route to Paris on July 24. A visit to the cobbles of northern France as well as summit finishes at La Planche des Belles Filles and Alpe d’Huez will feature along the route.
Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) attacked with 4.5km to the top of the Col du Granon and won stage 11 of the Tour de France. It marked one of the most dramatic days in the history of the Tour, with the Dane moving into the maillot jaune.
Vingegaard crossed the line 59 seconds ahead of second-placed Nairo Quintana (Arkéa-Sasmic), who attacked on the lower slopes of the Granon. Romain Bardet (Team DSM) soared up the climb take third place on the stage and move into second overall.
Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) could not follow Vingegaard’s vicious acceleration on the steep pitches of the Granon, crossing the line in seventh place, which resulted in him falling out of the race lead to third overall, now 2:22 back.

Stage 12 continues today with the massive 165.1km route from Briançon to the mountaintop finish at l’Alpe d’Huez. The peloton will retrace the stage 11 route by going over the Galibier in reverse, taking on the the Col de la Croix de Fer and then attacks should follow on the 21 switchbacks of l’Alpe d’Huez. It is Bastille Day, so the French riders will be extra motivated.
