The Springbok Sevens won their sixth consecutive World Rugby Sevens Series tournament – their 34th successive match and fourth title in the 2022 season – when they beat Australia 33-7 in the final of the Seville tournament.

The victory in Seville did not come easy as the Blitzboks were pushed in pool play, where they had to come from behind against Spain and the USA, and in the knock-out stages, where they were trailing Scotland, before hitting their straps in the Cup semi-final against Ireland and a hard-fought win over Australia in the final.
The final against Australia was a frenetic but nervy start with both sides making unforced errors. However, what counted in the Blitzboks’ favour was the fact that their miscues happened deep in Australia’s territory.
The physicality of the match immediately took its toll as Justin Geduld stayed down after a big collision. After an extended period of on-field medical treatment, Geduld was carried off the field and replaced by Mfundo Ndhlovu.
With the half-time break approaching and Australia dominating possession, South Africa were on the back foot and conceded a try in the last minute of the half when Ben Dowling split their defence to dot down under the posts.
But there was still time for a restart and the Blitzboks made the most of it as first Selvyn Davids toed the ball ahead before Christie Grobbelaar twice nudged it forward twice and then won the race score a converted try and lock the scores up at 7-7 heading into the break.
Christie Grobbelaar scored a brace of tries as the Blitzboks beat Australia 33-7 to win the Cup final at the Spain Sevens.
The South Africans continued their winning streak that started in Vancouver and Edmonton in the 2021 season, and continued in Dubai (twice), last weekend in Malaga and in Seville to notch up their best run ever in the World Series.
We’re looking forward to the April leg as the Blitzboks defend their title in Singapore, and then make their way to where their winning streak started – Vancouver.
