Embarrassing United lose 5-0 to Liverpool

Manchester United suffered a humiliating defeat at home to Liverpool on Sunday, with Jurgen Klopp’s rampant side running out 5-0 winners.

There were no United fans singing Solskjaer’s name during United’s biggest-ever home defeat against Liverpool, though. Solskjaer might believe he can still be a success, but he is beginning to sound like a man raging against a storm that is about to engulf him.

Liverpool are a team of players who know exactly what they are doing and they consistently execute the coach’s plan to the letter, with recent successes in the Champions League and Premier League a testament to Klopp’s ability to build a winning team.

But Solskjaer, who said after this game that his side have hit a “brick wall” in recent weeks, is drifting from one dismal result to another. And he has now become the subject of ridicule from opposition supporters who mercilessly chanted “Ole, give us a wave” as Liverpool played keep-ball in the closing stages.

On the 10th anniversary of a 6-1 defeat at Old Trafford to Manchester City, United lost 5-0 at home for the first time since City thrashed them here in 1955.

To make things even worse, substitute Paul Pogba was sent off in the second half for a lunging tackle on Naby Keita, who was carried off, before Mo Salah completed a hat-trick.

There are wider discussions to be had here about how the signing of Ronaldo has basically forced Solskjaer into the one tactical structure he can envisage with the Portuguese, but it was still impossible not to be amazed at how easy it was for Liverpool.

There was such a basic and evident problem before you even get to longer-term discussions about the absence of any kind of coordinated press or attacking approach.

The most humiliating aspect maybe wasn’t what was on the pitch but what could be heard in the stands. By half-time, by which time United were booed off, the away end were demanding more goals and that Solskjaer should stay. It was in its own way incredible and yet still totally unsurprising. That is maybe what’s even worse than the scoreline.

This was probably United’s most pathetic defeat of the entire Premier League era. Whether it leads to Solskjaer losing his job remains to be seen.

Hollywoodbets have Man City favorites at 9/10, followed by Liverpool at 7/4 and Chelsea at 3/1.

Unsurprisingly they have Man Utd at 50/1. Good luck with that bet.
